Skills assessments for employer sponsorship
When a subclass 482, 186 or 494 application needs a skills assessment, and when it does not.
OUR EXPERTISE
Employer sponsorship
An employer-sponsored visa needs a skills assessment only where that stream or that occupation requires one. It is not a universal first step.
Where it is required
- Direct Entry under subclass 186 requires a positive skills assessment, unless an exemption applies.
- Subclass 482 requires one for some occupations and some streams, and not for others.
- Subclass 494 requires one where the occupation requires it.
- Temporary Residence Transition under subclass 186 turns on the period of sponsored work, not on a fresh assessment in every case.
Choosing the authority
- The authority depends on the occupation and on the visa.
- The authority used for a points-tested visa is not automatically the right authority for a sponsored visa.
- We match the assessment to the stream that will actually be lodged.
What we advise
- Whether an assessment is required at all.
- Which employment and which qualification the authority will look at.
- The visa criteria sit on the subclass 482, subclass 186 and subclass 494 pages.
