Parent visas

Parent visas turn on the balance-of-family test and on which queue the parent applies in. Contributory visas carry a much higher visa application charge. Non-contributory visas carry a lower charge and a different queue.

We do not publish a processing time. The Department publishes the state of each queue.

Requirements

A child who sponsors the parent, and who is a settled Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen.
The balance-of-family test: at least half of the parent’s children live permanently in Australia, or more children live permanently in Australia than in any other single country.
An assurance of support where that visa requires one.
Health and character requirements.

Which parent visa

Contributory Parent (subclass 143) and Contributory Aged Parent (subclass 864): a higher visa application charge, and a separate queue.
Parent (subclass 103) and Aged Parent (subclass 804): a lower visa application charge, and a longer queue.
Aged parent visas are for a parent who is old enough to receive the Australian age pension. Subclasses 804 and 864 are applied for in Australia.
Sponsored Parent (temporary) subclass 870 is a temporary visa. It is not itself a grant of permanent residence.
